Pea Pod

We often hear in the news that there are many different health advantages of a vegetarian diet. But just exactly what are these?

In this article we'll examine the various nutritional advantages of a vegetarian diet, look at how meat-free diets can help to prevent and treat certain diseases, discuss whether there are any health risks associated with this particular type of lifestyle, and explain why vegetarian diets can be suitable for everyone.

What Are The Nutritional Advantages Of A Vegetarian Diet?

A vegetarian diet is defined as one which excludes any meat, fowl or fish. Instead, vegetarian diets tend to consist of cereals and grains; nuts, seeds and pulses; fruit and vegetables; and dairy and soy products.

In terms of nutrients and essential minerals, vegetarian diets are believed to offer many different benefits. Typically, they contain low levels of saturated fat and cholesterol, and offer high levels of dietary fiber, complex carbohydrates, folic acid, magnesium and potassium.

Other advantages of a vegetarian diet are that they also contain high levels of important antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E, and carotenoids which help our immune systems to function efficiently and protect the cells of our bodies from the damaging effects of free radicals.

Can Vegetarian Diets Help To Prevent Certain Diseases?

Various medical studies have indicated that a healthy and varied vegetarian diet can be extremely beneficial in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.

In particular, vegetarian diets may offer protection against heart disease, type 2 diabetes, renal disease, osteoporosis, prostate and colon cancer.

In addition, further medical research studies concluded that individuals following a healthy vegetarian lifestyle also enjoyed lower blood pressure levels, lower cholesterol levels, and lower rates of hypertension.

Furthermore, studies have also indicated that there tend to be lower instances of obesity among vegetarians, who are generally found to have lower body mass indices than non-vegetarians.

But Are There Any Health Risks Associated With A Vegetarian Lifestyle?

Some people are concerned that they may miss out on essential nutrients and minerals if they cut animal products out of their diets completely. However, research has concluded that provided vegetarians eat a varied diet they should have no problem in obtaining all the nutrients they need.

Therefore, to ensure optimal health it's vitally important to include foods from each of the 4 main groups every day - i.e. cereals and grains; nuts, seeds and pulses; fruit and vegetables; and dairy and/or soy products.

So, Are Vegetarian Diets Suitable For Everyone?

Yes.

Medical and nutritional experts agree that well-balanced vegetarian diets are suitable for everyone, including children, adolescents, pregnant and lactating women, and the elderly. Even competitive athletes can safely follow a vegetarian diet without any adverse effect on their performance.
